This freshwater species spawns in gravel in shallow water and the larvae rear for a few years before transforming into mature adults that spawn. Juveniles require sufficient numbers of other “host” fishes for this parasitic lamprey to feed on.
Limiting factors
Climate change; passage at artificial obstructions; adequate screening for water diversions to prevent entrainment and impingement of larvae; degraded riparian habitat from cattle grazing and logging; prey (host abundance)
Data gaps
Main host species; population dynamics
Conservation actions
Education and outreach; improve passage and screening; protect and restore habitat; water conservation.
