The Salmon River Estuary-Cascade Head COA (43 mi2) extends from just north of Neskowin south to Otis.  This area provides a unique combination of habitat types, from the rocky shoreline inland and includes the Cascade Head Scenic Research Area.  It also extends up into the mixed conifer forests of the Coast Range.  This COA is adjacent to the Nestucca Bay and Devil’s Lake COAs.

General

  • Elephant seals molt in the mouth of the Salmon River and Cascade Head.
  • Peregrine Falcon and Bald Eagle nest within this COA.
  • The has been a restoration of a salt marsh in the Salmon River estuary.
  • There is habitat for silverspot butterflies located on the grassy headlands of Cascade Head.
  • A portion of the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge within this COA includes the Neskowin Marsh, which protects a large freshwater coastal wetland that includes bogs and other rare plant communities.
